News Letter No.76 September 1964

In Scouting, as with similar organisations, there is never a dull moment. As soon as one event is over, one has to look forward and plan for another. Our Summer Camp for this year is now past history and although it will not go down in the records as the most successful, due probably to the lack of numbers attending and to the rather bad weather days, it was certainly enjoyed by all who took part. I am especially grateful to Frank Wroe and Peter Forrest for the work they did in running the camp and to Derek Wyeth for his untiring efforts with the Seniors. As is general with all Summer Camps, I learnt quite a deal about the boys with whom we are working.

Now for the future. Unfortunately, owing to the lack of entries the "Big Game Hunt" has had to be cancelled at the last moment and all the work put in by the Rovers has been wasted. Perhaps next year a more suitable date earlier in the year would be advisable. The Seniors have arranged a week-end camp for the Juniors in its place at Hemmings’ Farm.

The District Flag Competition takes place at Heythrop Park on September 5th/6th and our Peewit Patrol under the leadership of P.L.Tony Sealey has been entered. I am hoping for a better result this year from the entry, particularly as this is the last year that Tony will be eligible to enter.
On the same day, September 5th, one of our Rovers takes the vital "plunge" of marriage. We will be well represented at the ceremony and I am sure all members of the Group wish Peter and his future wife every happiness.

September 12th is the "great day" of the Fete. If our luck holds out weatherwise we look forward to a record day. Mr.Kerrison and his committee will meet on Monday 7th September at 7.30p.m. at Bodicote Lawn Hostel to tie up final details. All members of the Group from Seniors upwards and all helpers are invited to attend. All Cubs and Scouts are asked to canvass their neighbours and friends for bottles, tins and packets of groceries, etc. for use on the Bottle Stall. Articles collected should be brought to Cubs and/or Scouts the week previous to the Fete. Perishable goods such as vegetables should be brought along to the Fete ground on Saturday morning.

News of Sections. CUBS. Tom Heazlewood-Akela- has now received his warrant at the hands of the D.C. on behalf of the Chief Scout as Cubmaster and we wish him well with the task he has undertaken. He is full of enthusiasm so Cubs – give him all the backing he deserves. Akela has already invested 5 new boys: Steven Cummings, Raymond Dumbleton, Roberet Edwards, John Nadrett and Nigel Bannister. We wish them many years along the happy Cub and Scout Trail.
I regret that Janie Knifton-Baloo- to the Cubs, has asked me to accept her resignation, for personal reasons as she puts it. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Janie for carrying on with the Pack through a most difficult period of their history. Never anxious to take charge she did so naturally for a long period and but for her, we might not have a Pack now. We hope that Janie will always feel welcome whenever she chooses to visit our Cub and Scout activities.
Akela is now working hard to enable the Cubs to put on a good show at the Fete and also to gain several places in the Cub sports on September 19th. Soon after our next Group Council I hope to be able to announce several new names to the ranks of Cub Scouters and Instructors.

Scouts and Seniors. The main activities have been concerned with the Summer Camp but certain advances have been made in badge tests and in the October letter I hope to record some further awards.
