1st BODICOTE SCOUT GROUP

News Letter No.74 July 1964

The most important event of the month of June was gaining of the Queen Scout award by Senior Scout Bill Dodwell. The Queen Scout is the highest award any Scout can gain and a certificate, signed by Her Majesty the Queen, was presented to Bill by the Chief Scout on the occasion of his visit to Oxfordshire at blenheim Park on June 20th. We all offer congratulations to Bill who is the ninth Bodicote Senior to gain this award since we restarted the Group in 1954.

Whilst pride of place must be given to this award, a close second is the winning by Bodicote of two events in the Soap Box Derby at Blenheim. The car, designed and built by the Seniors with technical advice from one or two Rovers also gained the award for the fastest time of the day and for the best designed car.
Although the car was a bit heavy for the Cubs and Scouts the Senior drivers, Peter Wroe and Bill Dodwell fairly romped home in their respective classes. The car has now been entered for the novice class in the National races at Skegness on Saturday, July 11th. A party of about a dozen from the Group will travel up Friday evening and it is hoped that with some training and possibly a lighter chassis our Cub, Scout and Senior Scout will put Bodicote on the map nationally.
A number of Seniors, Scouts and Scouters camped at Blenheim on Friday and Saturday nights whilst a large number of Cubs and Parents visited the Park on Saturday.

CUBS. The Parents evening arranged for June 9th proved to be very successful. A large number of Parents turned up and witnessed a normal Cub evening concluding with an Investiture. The evening also gave Tom Haezlewood, our new Akela a chance to meet many of the Cub Parents. During June several new boys have joined and I believe that there are a number to follow.

SCOUTS. On June 5th I was pleased to invest Paul Brooker and Peter Clifford as Scouts and to welcome them into our world-wide Brotherhood. Long may they remain active members of the movement.
David Husband, who will shortly be leaving us, has gained his Second Class Badge. Well done David.

SENIORS. Apart from the work on the Scout car the Seniors have been progressing towards Queen Scout status, which I hope will soon be gained by several more Seniors.

ROVERS. On June 7th the Rovers held their second monthly meeting during which Frank Wroe invested Alan Davis as a Rover Scout. John Tee and John Anker were accepted as Rover Squires. The next monthly meeting will be on July 5th.
We are all very pleased to have had Frank back with us and delighted to know that from September he will be settling back in Banbury District.

SUMMER CAMP. May I remind you all who are attending Summer Camp that the Camp Bank is open and I should appreciate it if Parents would pay some of the camp fee into it as soon as possible.
