1st BODICOTE SCOUT GROUP

News Letter No.75 August 1964

Encouraged by the success of our "Soap Box Derby" team at Blenheim, we entered the "Bodicar" for the National Scout Car races, novices class for Cubs, Scouts and Seniors at Skegness on July 11th. There were 104 entries and necessitated the first in each heat to go into the semi-final heats and the first in each of these into the final.

Our car was a bit heavy for the Cub, G.Mills and he did very well in a fast heat to finish 4th. Tony Sealey met a very fast Scout heat and was just beaten into 2nd place, but Peter Wroe in the Senior race showed the way home in his heat and semi-final. The final was a real battle of class in which Peter came 5th with only a few seconds splitting the first 6 places. This reflects great credit on all the team and has goaded us into building a lighter car and achieving greater success next year when the races will take place at Weston-super-Mare.

Owing to holidays, I am putting this news letter out early to ensure a complete circulation before the Fete on September 12th.

As already announced this takes place on the meadow at the corner of White Post Road and Oxford Road, known locally as Tapper’s Field, and is being opened by Mr.Geoffrey Dodwell, Farming Correspondent of the Banbury Guardian and the Parent of two of our members.

Mr.Kerrison and his committee have already put in a lot of hard work and deserve all the support that they can get to make the Fete a success.

A special attraction this year will be a display of Indian Dances by the Boy Scouts of America Group from Upper Heyford. In addition, there will be the usual stalls and amusements for adults and children including children’s sports. The Bodicote Guides will be running the cake stall, part of the profits of which go to their funds. We hope this year to get the field mowed earlier to enable us to prepare a better bowling pitch. Hot dogs and rolls will be on sale in the evening during a sing song round the fire.

Admission to the fete is 6d per head (half price for Guides and Scouts in uniform and children under 15). Scouts and Cubs will be selling these beforehand whilst we hope that the Parents will dispose of as many draw tickets as possible. These are 6d each or a book of 5 for 2/6. If you have not already got yours, please get in touch with Mr.Kerrison, Adderbury 443 or myself.
Especially required are bottles and packets of all kinds for the Bottle and Grocery stall and any suitable gifts to be given as prizes in the draw.
