1st BODICOTE SCOUT GROUP

News Letter No.71 April 1964

Priority news for April must be the very successful Jumble Sale arranged by Derek Wyeth, Janie Knifton, the Seniors and other helpers. This event raised £23.10.0., despite a pouring wet day. Had the weather been kind I am sure they’d have reached the £40 mark. Well done all concerned, not forgetting the Ladies in the kitchen.

The 1964 census revealed a total of 50 uniformed members of the Group. This was a somewhat lower figure than for the last few years and is due to a temporary falling off of Scouts, Cubs and Scouters, but I feel confident that the numbers will soon rise again until we are again at full strength.

CUBS. We are sorry to learn that Dorothy Watts is giving up her warrant as Akela. This is understandable in view of the difficult circumstances which have befallen her of late. However we wish to thank her for all the effort she has put into Cubbing and hope that she will be fully compensated in a happy marriage due to take place around May time.

Whilst Balou – Janie Knifton is willing to carry on as an A.C.M. she feels she cannot take over as Akela, but we have been very fortunate in meeting Mr.Tom Heazlewood, who has had previous experience as a Cub Scouter and is very keen to help us out. We look forward to a long and happy association with Tom in the Group.

We also welcome to the Pack Michael Brooker who, I am told is as "keen as mustard" and will be invested within a week or two.

SCOUTS. With Michael Brooker in the Cub Pack we now have his Brother Paul in the Troop. He also will be invested as soon as he has passed his Tenderfoot Tests. I am sure that this will not be long. Good Cubbing and Scouting to you both.

On March 6th we received John Crabtree into the Scouts from the Cubs. I hope that he will enjoy Scouting as well as he did Cubbing.

SENIORS. This section of the Group seem to be the most progressive at the moment and it is very pleasing to see. Derek Wyeth has really got them going as the following will show. Richard Dodwell has gained his 1st Class, also Despatch Rider and Ambulance Badges, Bernard Guilford Despatch Rider and Ambulance and Colin Green Ambulance. All the Seniors took part in another night hike on 21/22nd March and are planning further adventures for the near future.
Five Seniors attended the first of a series of meetings at Heythrop College on April 2nd in training for the Venturer Badge. The next meeting takes place on Sunday April 19th at 10 a.m. I hope that all our Seniors will take advantage of this great offer of help by the Heythrop Rover Crew.

SUMMER CAMP. AUGUST 15th – 22nd at DUFFRYN-GLYN-CUL, near Towyn, West Wales. It seems that we can expect about 10 Juniors and 7 Seniors in camp and given the right camping weather I am certain all will enjoy the week. In preparation we shall start week-end camps as soon as the weather is suitable.

ST.GEORGE’S DAY PARADE. This will be held at St.Mary’s Church, Banbury on SUNDAY APRIL 26th at 2.45 p.m. Groups will assemble in the Market Place at 2.15 p.m. and I hope to see every member of the Group present unless illness prevents this. It is the one day in the year when every Scout and Cub should renew his Promise and Pray for God’s guidance to help him do this. Parents and Friends will be welcome at the Service.
