1st Bodicote Scout Group.

Newsletter No. 61. April 1963.

The outstanding event for April will be the Bob-a-Job Week April 15th-20th. This is the only time we ask the public to pay Scouts for their work and we ask the boys should be given jobs which they are capable of doing according to their age and that they are paid a reasonable fee for doing it. Each boy - Cubs and Scouts - will have a card on which should be entered the amount earned by the boy and signed by the "employer".

Each year we pay 2/- to Headquarters, 1/6 to the County and 1/6 to the local association per member in the Group. Any money the boys earn over 5/- per head will go into our own funds. I am sure that Parents will as always co-operate with the boys in enabling them to do good job.

April 21st is our St.George's Day Parade and I look forward to a full parade of all members of the Group so far as is possible. The parade will muster in Banbury market place at 2.30 moving off at 2.40. The service is at St Mary's Church at 3pm. All Parents and Friends will be welcome at the Church service.

Cubs. Progress is still being maintained in the section and the following awards have been made:-

1st Star. Christopher Bagnell, Edmund Cramp, Clive Harris.
2nd Star. Philip Walker.
House Orderly Badge. Richard Fiddes.
Guide badge. Colin Peterson.
Philip Walker has been made a Sixer. Congratulations to you all.

We welcome to the Pack, Peter Rainbow who has been transferred to us from Eynsham, whilst Clive Fiddes, John Furnish and Kevin Gascoigne have joined as Tenderpads.

Valuable assistance to the Cubs is being given by one of our Seniors, Charlie Knifton.

As a number of Cubs are now 11 years old and will shortly be going up to Troop there are a few vacancies in the Pack for boys between the ages of 8 years and 10 years 6 months of age. Cubs meet on Monday evenings in the HQ from 6.30 to 7.45 p.m.

SCOUTS: On March 23rd I had the honour of investing Alan Clarke and Paul Buzzard as Scouts and we welcome them as full members of the World Wide Movement.

As a result of Bernard Sealey reaching the Senior age he will be moving up into the Senior Patrol. I have made several probationary appointments. These will be confirmed in one month’s time if the holders prove themselves worthy. They are as follows:-
Tony Sealey P.L. of the Peewits with Roger Hogben as P.S.
Colin Green remains P.L. of the Owls with Philip Watts as P.S.
Bernard Guilford P.L. of the Woodpigeons with Peter Shaw as P.S.
I am looking forward to a far greater Patrol spirit in the future so P.L’s please do your best to LEAD.

As a result of the 1st Aid course so ably run by Maurice Caulkett, 7 boys have gaine the 1st Aid Badge. They are Brian Ash, Colin Green, Roger Hogben, Bernard Sealey, Tony Sealey, Peter Shaw and Philip Watts. Unfortunately only Colin can wear his badge at the moment. The others have yet to pass their 2nd Class tests. All are needing outdoor tests, and now that the lighter evenings are with us I hope to see a great improvement in this and 1st Class achievements.

Colin Green has gained his Jobman Badge. Well done. I hope that a few more boys will follow his example in badge training.

Seniors: A Firefighters course has been arranged for Tuesday evenings at Banbury Fire Station at 7.30 p.m. under Station Officer Berry which Juniors can attend. This will be followed by a Fireman’s course for Seniors. I hope that as many as possible will avail themselves of the opportunity to take a further step towards Queen Scout status.

A District Seniors evening will be run by the Heythrop Rovers once a month commencing at Bodicote HQ on Thursday April 25th at 7.30 p.m. All Seniors are asked to attend. This should be an interesting evening and a chance to do some practical Senior Scouting.
